This week, David Birch was in sunny Paris for the Paris Fintech Forum Leaders Summit and what a beautiful few days it was! At the stunning Chambers of Commerce in central Paris, the sun shone and the private gardens were the perfect location for networking.

David was on stage 3 times across the 2 days talking all things New Banking Models, Open Banking & Embedded Finance and Artificial Intelligence (AI):

New Banking Models

First up, David was in moderating mode hosting the first Paris Fintech Forum Summit panel of CEOs – Petr Baron (tbi), Jaidev Janardana (Zopa), Adrien Touati (Manager.one) and Ken Villum Klausen (Lunar) entitled ‘New Banking Models’ where the agenda covered:

Very few neo or challenger banks make money and there’s no obvious reason to think that’s going to change in the near future. So this leads us to ask 3 key questions:

  1. Is the interchange driven neo bank model doomed or can it be refreshed?
  2. What economic functions do banks perform that they could charge for?
  3. In an era of open banking and embedded finance, which business models make long term sense?

Open Banking & Embedded Finance: From New Tech to New Business Models

The next day, David was back on the main stage to be a panellist alongside Philippe Aymerich of Societe Generale, Eric Bierry of Sopra Banking Software and Iana Dimitrova of OpenPayd. Moderated by Elliott Gotkine, it was a fascinating discussion touching on:

  • The biggest achievements of Open Banking so far
  • The Impact on legacy banks, consumers and fintechs
  • How to generate the most value for clients and customers
  • Embedded finance business models that make most sense long term
  • The outlook for neobank interchange models
  • New revenue streams for embedded finance
  • The effect of ChatGPT
  • The role of the regulator going forward

AI & Financial services: real world or buzz words?

David’s last stage appearance at 2023’s Paris Fintech Forum was on Ali Paterson’s panel on Artificial Intelligence and Financial Services alongside Alain Clot (France Fintech) and Udayan Goyal (Apis Partners). It was a fun discussion with Dave’s golden nugget being “Your job won’t be replaced by ChatGPT, but rather it will be taken away by someone who knows how to better use ChatGPT”.

All in all a lovely few days at The Paris Fintech Forum Leaders’ Summit 2023.
