Digital Identity Down Under 2024 – Payments NZ

Payments NZ Visit

Last week, David Birch was in Auckland, New Zealand, paying a visit to his friends at Payments NZ. While there, David took part in 3 impactful sessions on Digital Identity:

As Strategic Project Lead at Payments NZ, Vanessa Ronan-Pearce pointed out, New Zealand is at

“at a critical juncture, at the intersection of open banking and digital identity. Digital identity has the potential to be the catalyst that unlocks the opportunities open banking has been promising for so long.”

Digital Identity & Payments Working Lunch at Payments NZ

First up was a Digital Identity and Payments Sprint Workshop over with Payments NZ and others involved in the project where David shared his recent thought leadership in this space, and particularly referenced how identity and payments should (could) work together.

Strategy Session with Payments NZ members

The second session was reserved for members of Payments NZ and was more of a strategy session covering:

  • An overview of recent payment developments from around the world
  • A global recap on developments in Account to Account with a particular focus on European merchant payments ecosystems
  • A look at the evolution of digital wallets and in-app payments
  • The importance of Digital ID, and the joining up of ID and payments

Internal Workshop for the Payments NZ Strategy Team

Finally David “shared his insights on a range of topics, from tokenisation and the future of the metaverse, to the rise of scams and frauds in the era of real-time payments, the implications of digital cash and central bank digital currencies, and the new frontier of AI’s impact on the financial world” for the Payments NZ internal team.

“David also gave a nod to his book with Victoria Richardson – Money in the Metaverse: Digital Assets, Online Identities, Spatial Computing and Why Virtual Worlds Mean Real Business – offering further food for thought.”
