Digital Identity Down Under 2024: Part 2
Wow! What a busy Digital Identity Tour Down Under it’s been this year! With his global experience and extensive knowledge, everyone wanted to make the most of Dave’s visit down under so he has barely stopped! Some highlights from this week:
LiveSign: Digital Identity Dinner
Tuesday’s stop on Dave’s Digital Identity Tour Down Under saw him guest speaking at Livesign‘s Digital Identity dinner hosted alongside The RegTech Associationheld at Rockpool, Sydney.
LIveSign’s CEO, Lara Paholski summed up the evening’s thought-provoking discussion:
▪️ How can the digital identity industry tell a compelling origin story? (remembering that Diner’s Club’s origin story from 1950 wasn’t true, but it didn’t matter!)
▪️ Is the Metaverse the logical setting for that story – as that’s where the relevant consumers are?
▪️ Why doesn’t business get a better return for the billions spent on identify fraud prevention- and how do we change that?

Thank you David Birch for your incredible insights and for sharing your knowledge with us all. We were all so lucky to have you for the evening!! 🙏 – Lara Paholski
Terrific evening and thought-provoking comments from David Birch as always: the challenge to learn and apply the lessons of prior breakthroughs like the credit card; and that where movies have historically been where a new product/service might have been popularised and catalysed, maybe we need to now think of online games and virtual world in the same way (a new paradigm for many of us, though not for our kids). – Brad Carr
Sydney: World’s First Payments Pub Quiz
Wednesday’s stop on Dave’s Digital Identity Tour Down Under saw him play quizmaster to the World’s First Payment Pub Quiz organised by the brilliant John Ryan of PayEd – Education in Payments. The event was sold out weeks in advance with 15 tables turning up to test their payments knowledge with questions spanning across Dave’s broad, global background in payments and digital identity!

Congratulations to the Amex Blues, who were worthy winners on the night!
National Australia Bank (NAB): Identity Innovation Day
Friday’s stop on Dave’s Digital Identity Tour Down Under saw him head to the National Australia Bank (NAB) Offices in Sydney to take part in their Identity Innovation Day. Dave was tasked with remarking on the global trends in identity and payments as well as taking a forward look at the impact on these in the future, especially given the contents of his new book Money in the Metaverse. Later in the day, Dave was asked to appraise the participant’s cross border use cases for digital identity solutions that they’d spent some of the afternoon working on.

Dave Birch stood with NABs Brad Carr, The RegTech Associations Deborah Young and Meeco’s Victoria Richardson
John Ryan’s summary of the day says it all perfectly:
“When the right crowd comes together to talk digital identity, things happen. And we had it all at the NAB Innovation Day in Sydney today – all 6 tables of us.
Tracy Hall was one of the speakers who shared her deeply personal fraud experience. Martyna Lazar Visa then followed that session with some shocking stats and background on hashtagpaymentsfraud. Andrew Black and Victoria Richardson did some great scene setting with their testing of connecting identity between Australia and Japan.
This was the best workshops on digital identity that I have attended. Brad Carr and his team did an amazing job again.
The keynote and workshop assist by David Birch was perhaps a critical factor that really helped to bring this day together. Some might say that this was a Divine event, but David informed us that, that will be next week, when he shares the same stage at the Pope (aka the leader of the Catholic Church), at the Vienna CBDC conference event.
A hearty thank you too to David for his significant contribution to so much education and discussion, this week in Australia, ,PayEd – Education in Payments Payments Pub Quiz included!”
NAB podcast
In amongst all that, Dave also managed to find time to record a few podcasts on his Digital Identity Tour Down Under, including this one:
“In conversation with host Brad Carr at NAB’s Melbourne offices during his recent visit to Australia, David shares his thoughts on the role of Digital Identity in countering fraud and scams, the future of identity wallets, the rise of bots, and so much more.

With David’s unique ability to unravel the complexities of emerging digital trends in finance and beyond and present the issues in a way that’s both enlightening and entertaining, this is an episode not to be missed.
You can listen to the full episode on SoundCloud, Spotify and Apple Podcast.” – courtesy of NAB News.
